Conservation & Planning
Upgrading to uPVC Sash Windows in conservation areas can be difficult. Historically, many conservation planners often refused applications to replace timber sashes with a uPVC Sash Window alternative. However, our Spectus Heritage uPVC Sash Window has been specifically designed to authentically replicate traditional timber sash windows , which has led to an increasing number of conservation approvals being granted. Please note that it is important to check with your local building conservation officer to ensure our Specus Heritage uPVC Sash Windows pass conservation guidelines in your area prior to ordering.
Mechanical Corner Welds
Our Spectus Heritage uPVC Sash Window has been designed with fully mechanical corner joints taking authenticity to the next level. Instead of the standard 45° uPVC welds on the frame and sash, they are replaced with 90° mechanical joints as found on traditional timber windows. This is a key feature contributing to the increased probability of our Spectus Heritage uPVC Sash Windows being approved in conservation areas.
Deep Bottom Rail
Deep bottoms rails are another key feature important in replicating traditional timber sash windows. The fully mechanical deep bottom rail convincingly replicates the bottom sash of timber windows from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and is complimented perfectly with the all new refined run through sash horns. This simple yet striking feature is key to progressing a conservation area application.
Slim Midrail & Sash Horns
The all new 37mm slim midrail helps our Spectus Heritage uPVC Sash window achieve the most authentic look on the UK market, ideal for period properties or homes in conservation areas. A new refined sash horn can carry a woodgrain foiled end cap that runs with the shape of the horn. Like other features on this window, the horns are mechanically jointed allow the horn to be a continuous part of the sash, contributing to a more authentic look.

Counterbalance Systems
Following the market uptake of uPVC sash windows, modern counterbalance systems were introduced to replace cords and weights, including spring balances and constant force coil mechanisms. These counterbalance systems enable the sashes to move smoothly and stay in position. Specific systems appear more appropriate for windows of particular sizes, which has led us to implement the following changes:
Windows with sashes up to 850mm in height will have constant force, quick release, and standard sash stops as they do now.
Windows with sashes between 851mm and 1150mm in height will have constant force, no quick release, and extended sash stops.
Windows with sashes 1151mm and over in height will have spring balances, quick release, and standard sash stops as they do now.
Please note that windows specified with PAS 24 security must have spiral balances and a fee may be applicable.
Extended Sash Stops
As listed above (point 2), on windows with sashes between 851mm and 1150mm we will be using extended sash stops, which will reduce the sash openings slightly to ensure the full rated load of the coil mechanisms isn’t surpassed.
For reference, please note the picture of the extended sash stop fitted on a 2400mm tall sash window.
