uPVC Sash Window Measure & Installation Guide

uPVC Sliding Sash Windows Installation Guide

Measuring

There are two main methods for measuring the window installation: brick to brick or check reveal. Both methods are explained below.

Brick to Brick Installation

  • Around 20-40mm of visible brick will be seen from the outside.

  • How to measure: Measure the external brickwork opening and deduct 10mm from both the width and height to allow for proper fitting.

Check Reveal Installation

  • The full width of the brick is visible from the outside.

  • How to measure: Measure the external brickwork opening and add 40mm to the width and 20mm to the height to allow the window to sit behind the brick. Ensure equal 20mm clearance on all sides for a secure fit.

Important: Always check that the internal width and height are larger than the external measurements to ensure a proper fit.

Window Removal

Follow these steps carefully before removing any existing windows:

  1. Remove the Bottom Sash

    • Cut the sash cords to the bottom sash.

    • Carefully prise off the internal staff bead to free the bottom sash for removal.

  2. Remove the Top Sash

    • Cut the sash cords to the top sash.

    • Remove the centre parting bead, allowing the top sash to be taken out.

  3. Remove Old Sash Weights

    • Take out the old sash weights from the frame cavity.

  4. Cut and Remove Old Frame

    • Carefully cut through the old wooden box frame, avoiding any nearby cables or wiring.

    • Prise out the side sections carefully to prevent damage to surrounding bricks.

    • Remove the head rail and cill.

  5. Prepare the Opening

    • Once all remnants of the old window are removed, clean off any remaining debris or old sealant to prepare for the new window installation.

Window Installation

Step 1: Positioning the New Window

  • Place the new uPVC sliding sash window into the prepared opening.

  • Use packers to ensure the window is level and plumb before securing it.

Step 2: Fixing the Window in Place

  • Secure the window frame by fixing it through the pre-drilled holes in the side jambs.

  • Check that the frame is square and level before fully tightening the fixings.

Step 3: Sealing and Finishing

  • Apply a weatherproof sealant around the frame perimeter.

  • Fit internal trims and architraves to finish the installation neatly.

  • Check the smooth operation of the sashes to ensure proper function.

Final Checks and Adjustments

  • Test that the sashes slide smoothly and lock securely.

  • Ensure that the window is draught-proof by checking the seals.

  • Remove any protective films and clean the glass and frames thoroughly.
